Planning & Accomplishing Your Goals

January 2, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Hey guys, I’m here today with a special post and giveaway from Jesse of NeuYear. I ordered their dry erase wall calendar from a Fab sale a while back and love it!

If you have ever felt the pain of a good goal gone bad, here is a three-step process you can follow to easily plan and accomplish virtually anything.

3 Steps to Planning & Accomplishing Your Goals

There is a reason why gyms and fitness centers see a huge uptick in memberships after the first of the year. Whether it’s wanting to lose those last few pounds, or a desire to live a more healthy lifestyle, “joining a gym” has become the quintessential New Year’s Resolution. The aspirations, however, don’t last very long. On average, most would-be fitness buffs back out of their commitment by March. Oops.

Resolutions, or goals, are powerful motivators–if you stick with them. Unfortunately, so many of us fail to set appropriate goals, or stick with them for such a short time, we never see the results. Books remain half-written, vacations never get planned, and new ideas die on the vine of mind, all because the goal-setting process gets short-circuited.

If you have ever felt the pain of a good goal gone bad, here is a three-step process you can follow to easily plan and accomplish virtually anything.

1. Pick Smart Goals

One of the most common reasons people or organizations fail at goals is because they aren’t smart. SMART goals look like this:

Specific. Smart goals have a specific end-game in mind. “Save the world,” and “cure cancer,” are all great goals, but they lack specificity. How do you want to save the world? “I want to reduce litter and pollution on the coastline by my house.” Awesome. What kind of cancer do you want to cure? “I want to help focus on children’s Leukemia at the Mayo Clinic in St. Paul, MN.” Now we’re talking. You need to have something to aim at. Being specific with your goals sharpens your sights and increases your chances at success.

Measurable. If your goal is to create buzz for an event, you’ll want to have a way to measure “buzz.” For instance, let’s say last year’s event drew 100 participants. A measurable goal would be, “We want to increase participation by 20 percent.” This, of course, gives you a number to measure your success with. Make it concrete. Quantify it. Make it measurable.

Attainable. Are you really going to lose 100 lbs. in 24 hours? Good grief, I hope not! Can you quadruple the size of your organization overnight? Double your earnings with one tweet? The correct answer, barring an appearance on Oprah, is “no.” These goals are not attainable–they’re unrealistic and out of reach. Setting smart goals means that you keep your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground. Setting too high of a goal (i.e., unattainable) is a recipe for disappointment.

Relevant. Does your goal matter? Is it relevant to you, your organization, or business? The Guinness Book of World Records is filled with people doing extraordinary things…that doesn’t matter. Longest competitive handshake? Most chainsaws juggled at once? Longest time standing still? Interesting, but ultimately unhelpful to just about everyone. Make sure your goals are helpful and relevant to you and those around you.

Time-bound. Last but not least, your goals need to have an end date on them. Something like, “We’re going to complete the parking lot refinishing project by September 30, 2013.” We know what you want to accomplish and by when. Parkinson’s Law states that a task will expand to the time allotted to it. Giving yourself a timeframe eliminates procrastination and what I call “the weasel clause.” Put a time frame on your goals. Keep everyone accountable and informed.

2. How Do You Eat an Elephant?

Once you’ve got your SMART goals defined, it’s time to start taking action. I should warn you, the Land of Action is where goals go to die. I know, it’s heartbreaking and sad, but it’s reality and sometimes you need to tie Old Yeller up to the tree and, well, you know, end it. You’re going to be different, though. You’re going to move from goal creation to goal action. How? By eating the elephant, one bite at a time.

A friend of mine used to paint houses for a living. As you’d imagine, the task of covering 3,500 sq. ft. with latex paint, by yourself, was a bit daunting. But he did it each summer, sometimes knocking out a dozen houses in three months (for the record, that’s really fast). You don’t eat an elephant in one bite (figuratively speaking, of course) and you don’t paint a house in one brush stroke. The key to his productivity was taking one section at a time. First the west side, then the east side, followed by the south and then the north. The system worked by keeping his stress levels down and productivity up.

You’re going to approach your goals the same way. You may have some lofty aspirations for yourself or your organization. Let’s say you want to run a marathon. Even those unfamiliar to the world of running know you don’t just go and run 26.2 miles without training. Even if you’ve never laced up jogging shoes before, running a marathon is possible if you start early enough and pace yourself.

Walk one block. Then walk a mile. Now jog a mile. Then another. Gradually add tenths of a mile as you get more comfortable. Before you know it, you’re crossing the finish line with enough miles for a 25-minute car ride in the bag.

3. Practically Achieving Your Goals

Practically speaking, you’re going to need some help along the way. Setting goals and keeping a rhythm to achieve them is one thing, grinding through the day-to-day is another.

Here are some tools that will help in your quest for goal domination:

Pomodoro App. You’d be amazed at what you can accomplish in 25 minutes. That’s the driving concept behind the Pomodoro technique: focus for 25 minutes, take a five-minute breather, repeat until the task is complete. It’s so simple, but this helpful timer keeps you on track when your mind wants to wander. Use it in an individual or team setting.

NeuYear Wall Calendar. Something near and dear to my heart is this full-wall calendar our team at NeuYear has created. It shows you the whole year at once, making it easier to layout long-term goals, set future deadlines, and quickly get a flow for the year. Added bonus? This beautifully-designed calendar has bigger squares so you can write more. Get 10% off when you use this link!

Basecamp. Out of the hundreds of project management software platforms out there, Basecamp remains one of the best. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles countless other platforms try and cram into their offering, but what it does have, it does well. Keep your entire team focused on the project-at-hand with message boards, file uploads, and document collaboration.

Conclusion

Like anything else in life, you get out of goal-planning what you put in. Give your goals the respect they deserve by making them SMART, actionable, and ensuring they make progress. How much different could your life be a year from now if you started on one of your goals today?

GIVEAWAY TIME! CLOSED

I wanted to share the NeuYear love, so Jesse was nice enough to offer THREE calendars to give away to three lucky readers! This calendar is seriously so awesome! It can be hung vertically or horizontally and gives you a view of the entire year. I am using mine for blog planning!

30 Before 30 // Goals Achieved

December 31, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Okay, so today is my 30th birthday (gulp) and it’s time for my 30 before 30 review! I feel like I fell off towards the end of the year, especially with the move back to New Orleans. That was pretty distracting and made some of the items on my list impossible. But over all I am proud of myself and think I accomplished a lot during my last year in my 20’s.

01 create an inspiring studio space at home. My space in Boston was really coming along but now I’m starting over again in New Orleans.

02 website/blog makeover Done. However I have more updates planned for 2013!

03 create a better home/work balance and learn to take real days off work. I have been taking most weekends off and taking vacations when needed but still finding it difficult to know when to stop working in the evenings, there is always something more to do! Kind of done.

04 travel to Austin or San Francisco. I was home in New Orleans for almost all of January and then again in April for a wedding and then moved back in August so I didn’t make it to either of these places. BUT my two best friends and I are planning a road trip in 2013 from San Fransisco to Seattle!

05 more tangible artwork. Combined this with number 14, kinda the same right?

06 learn to plan better for blog posts and focus on unique and meaningful content. Done. I have been writing more design based posts, personal adventures and unique content like recipes and DIYs and Advice.

07 read more books. Fail.

08 create a stationery and art print line and online shop. I added a few things to my Etsy shop but have not created a full line yet.

09 use camera in manual mode more than auto. A bit but not as much as I wanted.

10 serious purge of closet and create a coherent wardrobe. I sold on Ebay, had a garage sale and donated a lot. I also purchased some things I am really happy with!

11 design and send out Christmas cards. Done!

12 refinish living room table. Decided not to do this. It is in the “man cave” now and doesn’t need to be redone.

13 explore new places in Boston Done. I explored some new places, mostly restaurants and bars, of course.

14 more DIY projects. Done.

15 week-long camping trip. Nope, this one will have to do for 2012.

16 visit Salem during October/Halloween. Moved back to New Orleans before October = fail.

17 guest posts and/or collaborate with other bloggers. Totally rocked this one! Among many guest post this year I did a 4 part series for Alt’s blog and now have some lovely contributors here on my blog! Can’t wait to continue collaborating on 2013!

18 buy another lens for my camera. I bought a Wacom Tablet instead. New lens is on the list again for 2013.

19 visit Boston Harbor Islands. I am really sad about this one and can’t believe I never made it. Fail.

20 host a fabulous dinner party. We have friends over for dinner all of the time. While the meals are always wonderful, I still want to throw a special dinner party.

21 create a regular exercise program. Fail

22 update my design portfolio. I did add a few new projects but in 2013 I am doing a full overhaul.

23 take a self-portrait. Done. I have decided I don’t really like it though and want to do more.

24 go ice skating. Moved back to New Orleans = fail. I have been before but wanted to go again!

25 try a “what I wore” post. Done. BBQ in January // Wandering the Big Easy // Leopard Print and Crochet // New Orleans Fashion Week // Sister Style

26 learn Zander’s pizza recipe and work on cooking skills. Zander is pretty much just the master in the kitchen so I’m just leave this one alone.

27 leave the house more. (easier said than done when working from home) I am somehow not sure if I have accomplished this one or not.

28 one date night a month. JAN skipped, FEB Aquitaine, MAR The Hunger Games, APR wedding, MAY Rancid & Radiohead, JUNE Cooking Show, JULY Red Sox game & Aquarium, AUG Moonrise Kingdom… so we did pretty good until we moved home…

29 throw a special bridal shower/bachelorette party for my BFF Done. You can see the details here: Inspiration Board // Invitations // Party Survival Kit, Food and Photobooth

30 less online time. Fail.

What you think, I did pretty good huh? I don’t think I am going to create such an extensive list for 2013. I feel like too many things change throughout the year and it is better to adapt a list as things progress. My main focus for 2013 is going to be my business; refining my process, working with the perfect clients, designing products for my Etsy shop, working with an accountant, producing an e-course and lots of other things to get my business where I want it!

A Pile of Cards

December 20, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

I did it! I actually designed, printed and mailed out holiday cards this year. Every year I say I’m going to–and then it’s the new year before I know it. This was a goal on my 30 before 30 list so I felt a little more accountable this year and so glad I did it!

The Font Feast Presents Mallowmint Cupcakes

December 19, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Mallowmint Candycane Cupcakes on Cake Pedestal

So, I cheated a little bit this month. I swore to myself when I started this series that I would find the font first, and the recipe second, that I would wait until a beautiful font inspired me to make something tasty, that I’d let it all happen very naturally and organically. And that method has gone swimmingly for me so far, and in fact, a font did inspire this month’s recipe. The problem is that the font that inspired Mallowmint Cupcakes–a gorgeous, fluffy font named “Swirl”–isn’t actually developed yet. I saw a prototype of it on Pinterest and became obsessed with it! And I tried to find something exactly like it for this post, but there just isn’t anything like “Swirl.” Hopefully someday. For today, I found a fat, happy font that looks like marshmallows. It’s called “Cream Puff,” and reminds me of old-fashioned tins full of chocolate-covered Christmas delights–the perfect companion for sweet, peppermint cupcakes topped with gooey, marshmallow frosting, and topped with crushed peppermint and sparkling glitter!

Mallowmint Candycane Cupcakes on Cake Pedestal

Mallowmint Cupcakes Inspired by Cream Puff Font

for the cupcakes:
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups whole milk
4 egg whites
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 stick (8 Tablespoons) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

for the mallowmint frosting:
2 7-oz jars marshmallow fluff
2 sticks butter
4 cups powdered sugar
1-2 teaspoons peppermint extract
crushed candy canes
Disco Dust in Rainbow

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line 30 muffin tins with cupcake papers. In a medium bowl, combine cake flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a large measuring cup, add egg whites to whole milk and whisk to combine; set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat sugar, butter, and peppermint until light and fluffy. Add 1/3 of the flour mixture and beat until combined, then beat in 1/2 of the milk mixture. Repeat until all flour and all milk has been added, then beat 2 minutes on medium speed to mix thoroughly. Divide batter evenly among prepared cups. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean, 18-23 minutes. Remove from oven, place on a cooling rack, and allow to cool completely before frosting.

While cupcakes are cooling, make the frosting. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer (clean, of course!), combine marshmallow fluff and butter. Beat until combined. Add powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, and beat until frosting is smooth. Taste the frosting, and add up to 1 more teaspoon of peppermint extract if desired. Spoon frosting into a large pastry bag fitted with just the big, round coupler–no tip needed. When the cupcakes are cool, pipe a modest swirl of frosting onto the top of each cupcake. Avoid piping a huge pile of frosting on the cupcakes; it tends to “relax” as it sits, and you don’t want to have to scoop up the droopy bits! Just before serving, sprinkle generously with crush candy cane pieces and a pinch of Disco Dust! You might think the Disco Dust is unnecessary, but it takes these cupcakes from Ah! to AAAHHH!!!

Slowing Down

December 18, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

SLOWING-DOWN

Things are going to be slowing down a little bit on the blog through January. I decided to set some time aside to evaluate my blog and my business. I will be putting up a survey in January and would really appreciate your feedback about the blog. I’ll also be updating my portfolio and design service options and lots of other business related things that I haven’t totally wrapped my head around yet. In 2012 I focused on growing my blog and in 2013 I want to put more of my efforts into my business. Because of my wonderful contributors, you may not even notice my absence! Sometimes I feel so obligated to post new things to the blog. But I really need some time for my family around the holidays and my business in the new year! I’d love to hear if you have any tips for slowing down and not feeling guilty for taking a little blogging break.

My Favorite Gift Ideas for the Coffee Lover

December 10, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Today is going to wrap up this year’s gift guides, I hope they have helped with your shopping! Today’s guide is for the coffee lover in your life!

I am a huge coffee lover, I find myself brewing it and pouring cups all throughout the day and sometimes into the evenings. If you have a coffee lover in your life, they can be pretty easy to shop for. They’ll always need more beans, so that is a good place to start! While this coffee lover may already have a favorite way to brew their coffee, maybe you can upgrade their system with a new French press, espresso machine, cold brew system, Chemex or a single cup coffee maker. If you don’t feel comfortable making that decision, you can always pick up accessories like mugs, scoops, mills or cream and sugar servers that will allow them to enjoy their coffee drinking experience even more. Then of course you need some snacks with that coffee so why not grab some beignet mix, peppermint bark, biscotti or popcorn. You can also help the coffee lover in your life increase their knowledge on the subject. There are tons of coffee themed books and even cookbooks!

My Favorite Gift Ideas for the Coffee Lover

1 Espresso Machine / 2 Gloves (invite) / 3 Beignet Mix /4 Sugar Bowl & Spoon / 5 GoCoffeeGo Gift Card / 6 Camano Coffee Mill / 7 Coffee Cup Cozy / 8 French Press / 9 Infinity Scarf / 10 The Independent Coffee Book
