The Font Feast Presents Gratin Dauphinois

November 20, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

gratin dauphinois recipe

My family is really big on food traditions. We always have the same thing for dinner on St. Patty’s Day. We always have the same thing for breakfast on Christmas. And the Thanksgiving menu never changes. Without fail, we have mashed potatoes and gravy with our turkey, and they’re always delicious. BUT. These Gratin Dauphinois, which are really just scalloped potatoes with a fancy French name, are pretty irresistible, and would make an amazing addition to any Turkey Day menu. They’re actually a long-time family favorite, filled with butter and cheese and hints of garlic. If only I could talk my family into a potato upgrade…

For potatoes with such a fancy name, I needed a font with lots of oomph, and Baker Script is a perfect fit: rustic yet elegant, lovely and legible.

Gratin Dauphinois inspired by Baker Script

1 1/2 cups milk
3 lbs waxy potatoes, unpeeled (I like Yukon Gold or Klondike Red)
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 heaping cups shredded cheese (whatever kind you want)

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer over medium-low heat. While waiting for the milk to simmer, thinly slice the potatoes. We’re talking THIN slices, like 1/8″ thick. I use a mandolin for this and it’s a breeze. If you don’t have a mandolin, just slice them with a sharp kitchen knife. Lightly spray a 9×13″ pan with nonstick cooking spray. Scatter half of the potatoes evenly over the bottom of the pan. Drizzle half of the melted butter over the top (2 Tablespoons), and sprinkle on half of the salt, half of the pepper, and half of the garlic powder. Top with 1 heaping cup of shredded cheese. Repeat layers. When the milk has come to a simmer, pour it evenly over the top of the cheese layer. Bake for 40 minutes, or until deeply golden and bubbly. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Stately Type – Hand-lettered US Map Prints & T-shirts

November 15, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Kickstarter really has some amazing stuff y’all! I recently came across Stately Type, a project by graphic designer David Lesue. It’s basically two things: first, it’s a big 20″x 16″ letterpressed map of the United States where David hand-lettered the name of each state within the distinctive form of its boundaries.

Stately-Type-Hand-Lettered-US-Map-Letterpress

Second, it’s 50 individually designed hand-lettered t-shirts—one for each state in the union. David designed each one to reflect the identity of the state it represents—matching the shirt color and graphic color to each state’s personality.

The inspiration for this project came from my love of hand-lettered type and my fascination with the iconic shapes of state boundaries. By combining those two elements, I’ve come up with something that looks stunning—maps of the individual states and of the US as a whole that feel very personal, distinctive, and hand-crafted. -David Lesue

David has actually reached his goal but if you like this project as much as I do, head over to his Kickstarter page to support it, he has lots of amazing rewards for those who back his project!

Four Ways to Spark Your Creativity

November 13, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Let’s face it – as people with creative businesses, there are times when we feel a lack of vision and innovation. Whether it’s because we’re working on projects that leave us uninspired or we just simply can’t get our creative juices flowing, it’s a slump we don’t want to be stuck in for long.

Four Ways to Spark Your Creativity and Get Re-inspired

It’s something I’ve been struggling with lately, so I’ve come up with four ways to get re-inspired:

1. Try to remember the time when you were feeling the most creative or inspired.

There are moments in our lives when we feel like nothing can stop us and we can’t stop coming up with great ideas. The key to reliving those moments is to figure out what made those moments so special. Where were you at? What were you doing? Who were you with? What were you feeling? Try to recreate that moment as best as you can and you’ll be on the right track to getting your creativity back.

2. Take a class

We’re often inspired by new adventures and meeting new people, so taking a class or doing a workshop will help kick your creativity back in gear. Make something by hand, learn something new and connect with other creative people and you’re sure to get inspired. Some online courses to check out are CreativeLive (watch free courses) or Skillshare.

3. Visit Your Favorite Places

Our surroundings are one of the things that inspire us the most, and we all have places where we feel most inspired. When you’re feeling less creative than normal, it’s a no brainer to visit your favorite places to get yourself going again. Whether you’re influenced by the displays at your favorite store or by a landscape or park you love the most, take time to visit those places, enjoy them and let them motivate you.

4. Spruce Up Your Resources

Just like buying new workout clothes might help you to get back to the gym, new creative resources can help amp up your inspiration. Download some new fonts, explore new color schemes, try out a new program or let a new design book help you dream up new ideas. Something as simple as a new font to play with can totally transform your mood and your work.

What do you do when you’re feeling uninspired? Share your tips in the comments!

What I Wore // Striped Maxi Dress and Moto Jacket

November 11, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Hey friends! I haven’t done one of these post in quite some time but I found a new online shopping experience that I really want to share with y’all! It’s called Golden Tote and it’s the ultimate surprise grab bag!

I have never mentioned this on the blog, but I am not a fan of shopping. I’m very picky and have trouble finding clothes that fit well so I get frustrated and moody when nothing works out. I have come home empty-handed so many times, so I decided to try a different method.

I tell Golden Tote my size and let them do the shopping for me! This is also a good way to help me try new items that I might not choose on my own. They curate tote bags with a variety of items from different brands at prices 70-80% off original retail. In September I chose the $149 tote, which meant I got to choose two items and then I was surprised with the rest! I ended up with six items total which averaged $26 a piece after shipping!

So this striped maxi dress and moto jacket (which was one of the items I picked) were my favorites from the tote and you can see the other items at the end of this post! The bracelet I’m wearing here is from Pradman Jewels, another site you should check out, they have some amazing stuff! And psst, I’m going to be doing a giveaway with them next week!

Moodboard: Shine Bright Like A Diamond

November 4, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

This post was done in collaboration with Brian Gavin Diamonds. After a little brainstorming we decided that it would be fun to create moodboards around words commonly associated with diamonds, today we have bright! I love the colors we ended up with and the kind of funky vibe.

Brights Mood Board

Diamond / Napkins / Yellow Blinds / Lucky / Paper Diamonds / Pink Lips / Palm / Girl In Hat

Look no further than our brightest diamond… For decades, diamond architect Brian Gavin has been the industry leader in precision cutting – producing exquisite diamonds with exceptional brilliance. Brian Gavin is proud to introduce his creative interpretation of the cushion-cut diamond, complete with hearts and arrows motif, to the world. Also called a pillow cut, this attractive diamond shape, which is closely related to the Old Mine Cut that originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is well-suited for use in an engagement ring, pendant, earrings or other ring style. Once a widely appreciated gemstone cut, the cushion cut is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and Brian Gavin has made his stunning version of this classic style available to you. This post is in partnership with Brian Gavin Diamonds! Because sometimes you need a little guidance. Click here to learn more.

This month I also received Colgate’s new SlimSoft toothbrush to review, see my video here. I don’t usually like super soft toothbrushes so I was a little skeptical but I really love it! Since the overall design is slim it’s easier to get to the back of my mouth and the bristles are so thin, I feel like they give a deeper clean than my average toothbrush. I received the Colgate SlimSoft toothbrush complimentary from Influenster but all opinions are my own.
