Fitness: Getting Back On Track with Healthy Choices

September 22, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

This story about making healthy choices has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. But as always, all opinions are mine alone. #BalanceRewards #CollectiveBias

sports bra, apple, wedding magazine for fitness

A few months ago I was finally back into a good health and wellness routine, I was going to the gym at least twice a week (better than nothing) and doing pretty good at eating healthy. All of that went right out the window when I started traveling, oy! We did a ton of walking, but we also did a ton of eating! So now that I am home, settling back in, it’s time for me to get back on track. I’m in the process of planning my wedding and besides the venue, music, flowers, invitations, etc, I want my health to be a priority on that list as well. When I’m eating bad and not exercising I feel sluggish, I want planning my wedding to be an enjoyable experience and I want to be in great shape and healthy for the big day! It’s time for me to start making healthy choices again.

healthy food, new fitness gear and iphone app

I don’t know about you, but being able to track my health goals and getting a little reward every now and then really helps to keep me going. This is where the Walgreens app comes into play. I have always been a Walgreens customer for my toiletries and use their app to refill my prescriptions. I also have a Balance Rewards card. For every 5,000 points you earn $5 to spend at Walgreens. If I’m going to be buying stuff, I might as well get rewards for it right?!

sports bra, tennis shoes, capris, iphone, water bottle

But what I didn’t know until recently is that you can also earn rewards just by making healthy choices throughout the day with their Balance Rewards for healthy choices feature. You can track your steps, weight and blood pressure each day. Every time you track one of those items you earn Balance Rewards. You can even sync some devices (like a Fitbit) straight to your account so go register today and start tracking your progress!

wedding magazine apple and sports bra

Another way I like to reward myself is with some new workout gear every once in a while! I just got these Victoria’s Secret Sport items and adore them, I want to go get more in all of their fun patterns!

Garden Font by Los Andes

September 19, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

It’s been a while since I shared a favorite font but I want to get back into it so today I’m sharing a font designed by Mendoza Vergara, from the Los Andes foundry. Garden is a serif display handmade font with a playful and spontaneous feel inspired by Brazil’s cheerful and warm people. The Garden family offers a font with a set of original catchwords (‘Garden Catchwords’, based on brush calligraphy), floral dingbats and botanical ornaments. It’s well-suited for text composition, posters, headlines, label design and handmade-style items. Garden has a special 60% off introductory offer right now through September 25, so if you like it, grab it now!

Barcelona Spain Travel Guide

September 16, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

Continuing the sprancing recaps with a Barcelona Spain travel guide! We stayed at this apartment in the historic El Barri Gòtic area. The streets were tiny alleyways and our building looked like it was going to collapse at any moment, but it was an amazing location and experience. The last photo is a view from our window, the one morning we woke up earlier enough to see the street cleaning patrol. I really didn’t know what to expect from Barcelona but it ended up being one of my favorite cities! There are so many different areas, the mountains, the port, the beach, the parks, the old squares and gothic quarter and I loved it all! Use this link for $25 off your first Airbnb booking!

Grove Street Letterpress Demo Recap

September 3, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

As plans for the next New Orleans Made In Mind are in full swing I’m realizing I never shared a recap of our last event, a letterpress demo from the wonderful ladies of Grove Street Press! Owners, cousins Kate and Anna, blew us away with not only graciously hosting us in their crush-worthy space, but also taught us a bit about letterpress. They led us through a demo then gave everyone a chance to crank the press and leave with a print.

Travel Memorabilia

August 28, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

Memorabilia from Marseille France

Today is the day that I head home from seven weeks of travel. I don’t really know how to feel. I’m totally ready for my own bed, washing machine, comfort food, friends and family, but I’m going to miss getting to explore something new everyday. I’m going to miss Zander (who is still traveling for work through November) and my best friend (who lives in NYC).

Memorabilia from Paris France

I didn’t really know what to expect when I left for these adventures. I had a flight scheduled home for about three weeks in but decided to ride the trip out with my friends and THEN meet up with Zander since we hadn’t seen each other for the two months after our engagement. This spontaneity is NOT like me at all. A million things ran through my mind, I should be saving up for the wedding, my clients will hate my weird schedule, I really want to renovate the bathroom, what are you thinking?! But in my heart, I felt like it was something I couldn’t pass up.

Memorabilia from Barcelona Spain

Before we left on our trip, Megan and I knew we wanted to collaborate on an ongoing creative project while we traveled together. We decided to photograph mementos from each of the main cities we traveled to, Marseille, Paris, Barcelona, Nice and Madrid.

Memorabilia from Nice France

I am SO glad we did it, it was sort of like a meditation at the end of each city to remember what was important during our time there. It also meant we could capture these items in a photo and didn’t have to be weighed down by them for the rest of our journey (of course we still kept a few favorites). These photos will help me to remember this amazing trip forever! Much better than a bathroom renovation, eh?

Dreaming of a Bathroom Renovation

August 25, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

A bathroom renovation has been in the back of my mind for a while now. It’s the room in my house that needs it the most, unfortunately it will have to wait a while longer but a girl can dream can’t she?

White and Gold Subway Tile Bathroom

My bathroom tiles were originally blue but a previous owner decided to paint them rather than replace them, yikes! Years later, the paint is starting to chip and it is not pretty. Not to mention, the floor tiles still contain blue, so it’s hard to choose a new color scheme with those still intact. I’m really digging white subway tiles with a darker grout and gold faucets and accessories.

Design Portfolio: Kismet Cosmetics Lipstick Packaging

August 21, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

One of my favorite things as a designer is being able to help out small businesses and local companies. When Louisiana local, Caitlin of Kismet Cosmetics, came to me asking if I’d be interested in creating the packaging for a lipstick line she was releasing, I was pumped. I have always wanted to get into packaging design and this amazing local company was the perfect chance. Kismet already had an art deco influence and we needed to build a cohesive brand with the already established packaging and website.

Kismet Cosmetics Lipstick Packaging by Ciera Design

The box design needed to be used across various lipstick colors, stand out on a boutique shelf by itself or with multiple shades and Caitlin also wanted a package that  created a pattern when they were lined up next to one another. It was a challenge to meet all of the criteria but I’m so happy with how it turned out. It’s been so fun seeing the packaging on Style Me Pretty, fashion blogs and Instagram. It makes me really proud that I can help a local business, even if it’s in a small way.

Segovia Spain

August 18, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

While in Madrid we decided to take a day trip to Segovia which is just a short train ride away. Once we got there we basically just wandered the small streets and followed the signs around the city to the Aqueduct, Alcázar (rumored to have inspired the castle in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty), Cathedral and Casa de los Picos House. It’s an amazing little town with the most charming paths and views of the country side. If you are ever in Madrid and have an extra day, I would definitely take the trip!

Madrid Spain Travel Guide

Today I met up with Zander who I have not seen since the day after we got engaged two months ago! I have been traveling for almost 5 weeks now, whoa, this is such a strange and exciting time in my life! I just had two days alone in London after my travel mates Megan and Betsy headed back to Madrid for their flight home. So I’m finally feeling a little caught up and had some time to start editing my photos! I took over 400 in Madrid alone so it was super hard to narrow it down! At the beginning of the trip, we made up the word sprancing to use for our hashtag on Intagram, it loosely translates to jumping around Spain and France. So let’s start the sprancing recaps with Madrid! We stayed at this apartment near Plaza de Mayor in Puerta del Sol. The photo above is the view from our window. Use this link for $25 off your first Airbnb booking!

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish Desktop Freebie

August 4, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

This month’s desktop freebie was a collaboration with Chelsea of Lovely Indeed for her desktop designers series. I just love the quote “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” from Steve Jobs and think it fits perfectly with my life right now. The hand drawn type is by me and the photo Chelsea took when she was living in NYC. Head over to Lovely Indeed to download it and read a bit about my pet peeves, music crushes and fears.

That’s A Wrap: July

July 31, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

I was planning on keeping the blog more up to date while traveling but it is way harder than I anticipated, especially since my client work must come first! So far, I have been to Madrid, Barcelona, Marseille, I’m currently in Nice and leave for Paris on Saturday. On Wednesday, I laid on the beach in the French Rivera and watched my plane home fly over head. I decided I wasn’t done exploring and now I don’t even have a plane ticket home. After Paris I am heading to London and fingers crossed for Iceland!

Incase you missed any posts this month, here is a recap. I’ll be posting more travel photos as soon as I can. But I decided to let taking in the culture and experiences be my number one priority, so who knows, I may not post them til I return home… I’m letting my guilt of not posting consistently go for now!

I also want to introduce y’all to an awesome brand I just discovered. Mercer + James is a luxury line of men’s grooming items & accessories with seriously gorgeous items from products like shaving oil, to sets, to safety razors and even old-school hats (really anything to make guys dapper)!!

Mercer-and-James

Mercer + James evolved out of my husband’s search for a better shaving set. The market seemed to be full of either low-quality big-box products that would break quickly, or overpriced “high-end” brands. We concluded that if we couldn’t buy what we wanted, we’d design it for ourselves. Before we knew it, our home was filled with samples and drawings, and our kitchen was brimming with concoctions as we searched for just the right elements to represent what we think men’s grooming should be. Designing is a fun thing that my hubby and I get to share, and it’s really just a bonus that we get to share what we love with the world. -Elizabeth of Mercer + James

Graffiti Graphics: My Parents’ Sign Shop

July 29, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

For some crazy reason in June we decided to host two Made In Mind events even though we usually only do it every other month. But the cool thing was that we held one of them at my parents’ sign shop, Graffiti Graphics! My parents started a sign shop together before I was born, in what turned out to be my first bedroom. They are both so talented and I know that’s the reason I started to take art classes in 2nd grade and eventually pursue a career in a creative field. I recapped the event over on the Made In Mind site, but I thought it would be fun to show some of the details that Laura Rockett captured of my parents’ space too!

How Do You Celebrate The Bright Side of Life?

July 23, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

Eating Mango Frozen Fruit Bar

As you can probably tell by my travel adventures this summer, I’m attempting to be a little more spontaneous and embrace the bright side of life. Traveling to Europe for a few weeks, maybe a few months (still unsure, ah spontaneity) was not an easy decision for me since I’m a frugal spender and a planner. But I had an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up so I’m doing what makes me happy, spending time outside, traveling and treating myself, even if it’s something small like a frozen fruit bar on a hot day!

I’m not letting work dictate my life, although I am working part-time while I travel but I’m really trying to embrace the adventures by breaking routines and taking in my surroundings. Before leaving for Spain I tried these amazing mango fruit bars from Fruttare (so yummy and perfect on a hot New Orleans day) and during my travels I have been indulging in local sweets like chocolate and churros and gelato! How do you celebrate the bright side of life?

July 18, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

I can’t believe that the first city of my trip is already wrapped up. On Wednesday we headed from Madrid to Barcelona! I’ll be sharing Madrid photos soon but couldn’t wait to post these from a charming chocolate and churros place called Chocolatería San Ginés that was near our apartment. I’m trying to really embrace my time in Europe and not be on social media too much but you can follow along with my photos on Instagram under #cierasadventures or the group tag we are using is #sprancing!

On Speaking at Alt Summit

July 16, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

On Speaking at Alt Summit 3

When I was at Alt last January I remember saying that I would NEVER be able to speak in public, and definitely not at a conference like Alt, with so many other bloggers and creatives that I look up to. I’m much more comfortable talking to people one-on-one and I get incredibly anxious in large groups of people, especially when I’m front and center. I’m an introvert so attending events like Alt are already out of my comfort zone, let alone speaking at one.

On Speaking at Alt Summit 1

When Mariah suggested that we pitch a panel idea together with Melissa, PJ and Tan, for some reason I said yes, secretly hoping we didn’t get picked, but to my surprise, they loved our topic idea and here we are, a year and a half after saying “I would NEVER”, I did it, I spoke on a panel at Alt Summit!

On Speaking at Alt Summit 7

It was the scariest thing I have ever done, but because of that, one of the most rewarding. I believe that if you are not pushing yourself or doing scary things then you are not going to grow as a person or grow professionally. One of my favorite quotes from Alt this year was from Emily McDowell “fear is an asshole and a liar” and I’m so glad I didn’t give in to my fear! I mean, I got to speak at the same conference as Martha Stewart!

On Speaking at Alt Summit 2

Our room was packed and it was awesome to see everyone so engaged and to hear how much people appreciated the content and hard work we put into making our panel special.

Growing Your Blog By Positioning Yourself As An Expert

July 3, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

Blogging about what you know and love will make a difference! Learn how to increase traffic by positioning yourself as an expert in your field!
Just two weeks ago me and these lovely ladies got up in front of the Alt Summit crowd and chatted about growing a small blog.
Alt SLC Summer Thursday Morning

If you were not there, or need a refresher, here is an overview on what I spoke about, growing a small blog by positioning yourself as an expert! You can download the worksheet we handed out, and then work while you read this post.

Growing A Small Blog

[Tweet “How to grow a small blog by positioning yourself as an expert. #growingasmallblog #altsummit”]

I’m sure y’all have all heard the advice to blog about what you know and love – it’s usually the first piece of advice you’ll get for blogging and I don’t think anyone will deny that as a great starting point. But I want to take it a little further by talking about positioning yourself as an expert. One of the main ways I’ve grown my blog is by sharing tips from my experiences in graphic design, social media and running my own small business.

I use the term “expert” loosely, because obviously I don’t know everything about these topics, but I am passionate about them and I do have a degree in graphic design and have been working in the industry for eight years. So I probably know more than the person opening Photoshop for the first time or who just signed up for Twitter last week.

So basically, you don’t have to wait for somebody to call you an expert in order to give expert advice.

Give Expert Advice

[Tweet “You don’t have to wait for somebody to call you an expert in order to give expert advice. #growingasmallblog”]

I’m always getting questions through email, on social media, and even from friends and family, whenever there is something design related they know they can come to me. And I’m sure the same happens to y’all from time to time. Maybe people are always asking you about how you put your outfit together or asking for your recipe when you cook for them. That’s people showing that they value what you know and trust your opinions.

So if you find that people are consistently asking you a about the same topics, it’s likely they would become a reader of your blog if that’s what you focused on. As your name starts to get associated with a specific field, then your network will start to grow.

Ok, let’s move onto a strategy for coming up with content:
First you have to figure out the types of problems that your readers are having in your field. So, using the worksheet in the download, jot down a few things that you enjoy doing and that people always ask you about. What do you know that can benefit other people?

What Do You Know That Can Benefit Others

So for example, I’d be writing down that people ask me about the fonts I use and other design related questions and how I made the switch from working at an agency to full-time freelance. Remember – no problem is too big or small to write down.

Then, once you know the challenges your readers are having, you can come up with a plan to turn those problems around into solutions.

Growing Your Blog Content Strategy

Here is an example of how I determined my readers problems and then solved them by writing an additional post that I didn’t originally intend to:

When the Facebook layout was updated two years ago to the timeline it was a pretty major change. It was much more design oriented with the large cover photo and app tabs. If you remember, they even allowed users to preview their changes before they had to commit for good so that everyone could ease into the new design. I decided to jump right and update the few different pages that I manage. As I was designing the cover images and doing the updates, I anticipated that my readers may want to hear some ideas on how to keep their pages consistent with their blog or business branding, so I wrote a blog post Design Tips for your Facebook page.

I ended up getting tons of questions beyond the design aspect of people wanting to know how to actually install the apps I was using. So every time I got a question, I was stopping in my tracks and individually responding to them all with detailed instructions in an email.

As much as I’d love to be able to answer every question one-on-one like this I realized it just wasn’t realistic or a productive way to work. So I decided to write another post with step-by-step instructions for installing the apps which has ended up being one of my most popular posts. Turning reader questions into blog posts is now one of the ways I build my editorial calendar.

If you find people still have questions after you write about it, you can take it further and create a blog post series or even teach a course or write an e-book focused on digging deeper into certain topics. That’s actually something I recently did, I wrote a guide on planning a local event series because I needed to go more in-depth than a blog post would allow. And this helps even more to position yourself in your field.

Now I know some people are new to their field, so if you are just getting started, you can write about things that you are interested in learning more about, classes you are taking or things you are teaching yourself along the way. You can have this learning experience with your readers.

Have A Learning Experience With Your Readers

But you never want to risk losing credibility. So if you’re not quite certain of something, just let it be know that you are experimenting and figuring it out as you go, because you don’t ever want to put incorrect information out there – you don’t ever want to lose your readers trust.

Do Not Lose Your Readers Trust

Now I’m going to give you guys a few formats and examples that I find work well for showcasing your expertise:

– how-to posts or videos
• Merricks Art
• Pugly Pixel

– provide valuable resources
• I’ve shared resources like My Favorite WordPress Plugins
• I love to share my favorite fonts

– curated posts
•
theme thursday from Oh, What Love
• round ups like products used to create on-the-go on The Fresh Exchange

– featuring others
this is a great way to show support and recognize others doing a good job in your field

– lists
these are really easy for your readers to share, especially on Twitter

When you’re able to solve a problem for someone, they feel like you’ve given them insider tips & tricks and in turn form a stronger bond which makes them more likely to come back for more because people appreciate free advice.

People Appreciate Free Advice

But don’t feel the need to do it all or try to imitate somebody else. Don’t post what you think people want to hear if it’s not something you truly enjoy writing about.

I don’t really know anything about fashion but do share style posts from time-to-time, because it’s fun for me, but that is not how I have grown trust from readers and my readership over the past four years. It’s been by positioning myself as an expert. It’s not easy and it won’t be an overnight success but as Stan Smith Says, people need experts.

People need experts. They have value because they have done the research, legwork, and training that we can’t do on our own.  Not only that, we rely on experts to see further down the road than we can.  We cherish their insight and lean on their wisdom.  Having an expert means that you can shortcut the process and achieve your goals quicker.” – Stan Smith

So now, looking back at what you wrote earlier, write down a few topics that you could write about that will help to position yourself as an expert.

Because before you look to other blogs for things like guest posts, advertising or giveaways you need to get your own blog in a good place. Consider what you do really well and what you love and start sharing that compelling, informative and unique content.
