Brand identity and design solutions for creative businesses and passionate entrepreneurs

Coral, Navy and Gold Wedding Moodboard

March 17, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

Wedding planning is in full swing y’all! It’s actually a lot harder than I thought it would be but so far I have my dress ordered, venue, florist and photographer. I have 9 different Pinterest boards so far, seriously, don’t judge. Just like I do for client branding, I’ve compiled all of my inspirations into a mood board now that I’m working on some of the smaller details and the invitations. Guys, designing for myself is so hard, I’m scared to get started, but that’s what’s next on the wedding list!

Design Portfolio: Julie Rootes Interiors

March 9, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

Sometimes clients come to me with a logo that just needs a little tweaking or they need help building an overall style to carry through their other materials. This was the case when Julie Rootes reached out to me. She had a great start to a logo but needed to take her brand identity a step further to really stand out within her niche. We decided on which items were most important for her business and I got to work. We went with a letterpress business card and a simple design including a blind emboss to add some additional texture.

Branding Mockup

While I love starting from scratch and designing logos, one of my favorite parts is also building out the brand and bringing it to life after the logo is finalized!

If you are not sure how to expand your brand, reach out to me and we can brainstorm and collaborate on some new materials for you! P.S. Did you see the brand identities for The Made In Mind Social and Sweet Tea and Co.?

February 27, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

January and February were pretty packed and I feel like I’m being pulled in a million directions: blog, design work, The Made In Mind Social, wedding planning and conference planning, whoa! Don’t get me wrong, I love it all! And this is one of the reasons I decided to bring contributors back to the blog and I’m super excited for that!

Ciera Design Instagram

I got to visit my sis in New York for the first time since she moved about a year ago and if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll also know that Mardi Gras was pretty early this year, I kind of feel like 2015 is just starting and it’s already March! Speaking of Instagram, I realized that I don’t ever share my photos here on the blog so I did a fun little collage above.

Galano Classic Font by Rene Bieder

February 13, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

Galano Classic from Rene Bieder is the latest in a series of releases inspired by the classic grotesques of the early twentieth century. Designed as a companion to Bieder’s Galano Grotesque family, Galano Classic is informed by the geometric faces of the early twentieth century. But instead of attempting another reinterpretation of the geometric genre, this subfamily prefers to linger in the past, flirting with modernist proportions, and sporting details such as the long stretched leg of uppercase ‘R’ and the traditionally shaped lowercase ‘g’. Many of Galano Grotesque’s characters were redesigned from the ground up for the Classic variety; it also has more alternative characters, ligatures and OpenType features. With ten weights with matching italics, each containing 555 glyphs, Galano Classic is an ambitious subfamily; while it was planned to be the display version of Galano Grotesque, it also works perfectly well in small sizes and long text passages. Y’all know I love to share a font sale and this one is big! Galano Classic is 80% off until February 15 so grab it now!

Paid Blogging Contributors Wanted

Happy Wednesday! After much thought, I’ve decided to bring additional content creators back to the blog! I love collaborating and connecting with other bloggers & creatives. You’ll still see a majority of the posts from me, but doesn’t the idea of having some fresh faces around here sound like so much fun? Not to mention, with my wedding and conference both in October, I have a lot going on and I don’t want the blog to suffer!

  • Blog posts will be promoted across my network of followers.

Print Your Own Valentine

February 11, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

In New Orleans, we’ve all been a little pre occupied by Mardi Gras to even think about Valentine’s Day. So if you’re like me, and totally behind, I have some VERY affordable print yourself card designs up in the Etsy shop. And what makes them even better, you can print them as many times as you need for personal use.

Marseille France Travel Guide

Truthfully, when we were in Marseille, we didn’t love it. I think we were just a little worn out at this time in the trip. But now that I look back on it, it was really great and I totally recommend going! I can’t believe I didn’t appreciate it more when I was there! We stayed here, in the heart of the old town. Use this link for $25 off your first Airbnb booking!

Fish Soup – we meant to get a Bouillabaisse (traditional Provençal fish stew originating from Marseille) but we somehow never got around to it

Things to do in Marseille

Beaches – We went to Plage Des Catalans, the first beach you’ll come across on leaving the Old Port

Marseille’s train station is gorgeous and offers a great view since it is perched on top of a hill. After we left Marseille, we took the train to Nice and this was an amazing ride, we passed through the cote d’azur and it was gorgeous!

An Exciting Announcement!

February 4, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

As I mentioned in January’s Made In Mind meet-up recap, we used this time to celebrate our accomplishments from 2014 and to set our most ambitious goals for 2015. We all displayed our goals and it was really great to see everyone’s enthusiasm for the new year!

Setting-Our-Most-Ambitious-Goals

Then Kristy and I, along with Justin from Invade NOLA, announced our plans for 2015… that we will be holding New Orleans’ First Creative Entrepreneur Conference!

New-Orleans-Creative-Entrepreneur-Conference-1

It’s crazy to think that it was a year and a half ago when I was telling y’all about my new venture, The Made In Mind Social. Ten meet-ups later, I felt that it was time to take it to the next level!

New-Orleans-Creative-Entrepreneur-Conference-Brainstorming

So far, we’ve created the event framework, divvied up tasks, are scouting locations and pulling together equally enthusiastic volunteers interested in being a part of something bigger. We are ambitiously working to build a killer conference!

Now, we are asking for your help in picking the perfect name and are starting to build volunteer teams to make this dream a reality! If you are interested just fill out this form, it takes 1 sec and we’d love your input.

Also, if you have any tips we’d love to hear them… (locations, things you like at other conferences, things you don’t like, sponsorships).

Love, Dream and Be Free

Hand Lettered Love Dream and Be Free

I’m really feeling this quote right now, I’m still all motivated by my new year’s resolutions and with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, things are feeling a little more lovey and romantic aren’t they? I like to freshen up my office walls every so often and I figured you may like to do the same. So, I designed this new art print and have it in my Etsy shop! And I also decided to create it as a desktop, iPad, and iPhone wallpaper which you can download for free:

Made In Mind Social: Cheers To The New Year Recap

January 26, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

Made In Mind Social Meet Up New Orleans 01

Before our community of ambitious entrepreneurs and creatives hit the ground running for 2015, The Made and Mind Social wanted to first take an evening to celebrate a successful year. In 2014, we held six meet-up events where collaborations were formed, new friendships were made and some serious business goals were tackled. We (Ciera and Kristy) felt like it was time to pause and raise a glass to relish in what we and our members have accomplished.

Members anonymously declared the biggest projects they want to tackle in the coming year and clipped them on the screen. We also announced our most ambitious venture which I’ll be sharing here on the blog soon!

Featured on 100 Layer Cakelet – Fiesta Safari Birthday Party

January 19, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

A few months back, Lisa, Co-Founder of A Charming Fete contacted me about customizing my black and gold safari invitation to fit with a fiesta theme she was working on for her Daughter’s second birthday. I was super happy with how this colorful version came out and blown away when Lisa sent me the photos, what a vision! I’m ecstatic that this party was featured on 100 Layer Cake-let, it really deserves the recognition and I’m so happy that I had a small part in it!

Lulo Clean Font by Yellow Design Studio

January 16, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

I’ve featured a few fonts from this studio in the past and they’ve done it again! Lulo Clean from Yellow Design Studio is the non-distressed version of the original textured Lulo family. It’s friendly, retro, and amazingly 3-dimensional. Endless effects can be created by adding different colors to each of the five stackable layers. Like the original Lulo, the Clean version is all-caps and includes regular and bold weights and extensive language support. Lulo Clean One and One Bold can double as companions for the distressed Lulo, to be used when texts are longer and smaller. There’s no discount on Lulo right now, but don’t be blinded by percentages: at full price it’s a bargain anyway, go grab it!

How To Start A Meetup Group

January 12, 2015 by Ciera Holzenthal

Starting A Networking Event - In the beginning, I faced a million questions and more than a few challenges. The good news? I learned a lot about how to plan and host a successful event—and I’m ready to share that knowledge with others who hope to do the same - click though to learn!

I’m a graphic designer. I’m a content creator—a blogger, a crafter, a photographer. I had no experience in event design or planning until I created The Made In Mind Social a year and a half ago. Now, every other month, I plan a meet-up for creatives of all kinds to gather, meet, mingle, connect and collaborate.

In the beginning, I faced a million questions and more than a few challenges. The good news? I learned a lot about how to plan and host a successful event—and I’m ready to share that knowledge with others who hope to do the same! Like many strategies, you need to start with the 5 W’s (and 1 H) – Who, What, When, Why, Where and How.

WHY: Purpose, Passion, Goals

It’s not what you do but why you do it that matters. By creating a vision and setting goals upfront, you will be able to maintain a focus throughout the planning process and more easily define the event itself. A clear vision will set you up for success—and concrete goals will allow you to measure that success.

Need help defining your why? Click here for a free worksheet!

WHO: Partners, Attendees, Marketing

This process—planning and executing—is not a solitary one. Of course, you’ll want to think about attendees, who you’ll be inviting. But you’ll also want to consider who you want to work with.

WHAT: Event Format, Branding and Design

Now it’s time to get started on designing the event itself. This part of the process involves two aspects: deciding what type of event you want to host and developing the branding.

WHEN: Date and Time, Frequency, Planning Timeline

The type of event may dictate when or how often it happens. Or, if it doesn’t, your next step is to select when the event will take place and how often it will occur.

HOW: Budgeting, Securing Sponsors

Next think about the components that will make your event possible—your budget and your sponsors. Managing money and getting sponsors on board may seem intimidating, but with a little organization and a professional demeanor, you’ll be able to make things happen!

WHERE: Venue, Vendors, and All the Details

Now, you’ll want to nail down the very important question of “where” (the venue!) and make sure you plan for all the elements of the event itself—the décor, entertainment, food, photography, or anything else you want to include.

BONUS: Goal Setting Worksheet!

You might have heard it before: begin with why. Before you dive into the details of a date and venue and marketing, take some time to think about the purpose behind your idea. Why do you want to start a local event? To help you out I have created a FREE goal setting worksheet for you to download and work through your WHY.

Click here to download the event series goal setting worksheet!

This worksheet is a sample from my ebook, The Meetup Guide: How to Create, Plan, and Host Your Own Local Event Series.

If you want to start your own local event, you don’t need to start from scratch. This list is just a taste of the insights and information I’ve collected in my e-book, The Meetup Guide: How to Create, Plan, and Host Your Own Local Event Series. It’s 60 pages of actionable advice and tried-and-true tips, including 10 worksheets to help you get organized and make things happen. Simply put, if you’re looking for a resource to guide you through the process, this is it! You’ll learn your own lessons along the way, but the great part about hosting an event series is that you have a chance to improve the event each time.

Blue and Silver Snowflake Christmas Decor

December 26, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

Hey friends, I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and a happy holiday season! My mom makes an amazing brunch each year for Christmas day and she always outdoes herself with the food and the decor. This year she did a gorgeous blue and silver theme. She cooked quiche, ham & egg cups, Grand Marnier French toast, mushroom/potato/chorizo fry-up, French onion soup,  berries with creme anglaise, peach and blueberry clafouti and cracked pepper & brown sugar bacon (y’all, this bacon was legit)! My dad smoked a turkey on the BBQ pit and for drinks we had fresh squeezed orange juice from my dads orange tree and blackberry thyme sparklers. It was all unbelievable and such a great day spent with family, I don’t want Christmas to be over!

A Beautiful Holiday Mess & Clean Up

This story on holiday crafting and clean up has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser but all opinions and experiences are mine alone. #EurekaPower #CollectiveBias

Gold Glitter, Ribbon, Bows and Craft Supplies

Who else seems to have a house covered in glitter, Christmas tree needles, tinsel and confetti after the holidays?? Then throw in some DIY, whew, so pretty, but so messy! We got our tree up last week and finished decorating it yesterday. I decided I wanted to get my craft on and make my own tags from a bunch of craft supplies that have been laying around. I busted out hole punches, glue, string, glitter and all kinds of stuff!

Christmas Wrapping Items Under the Tree

I love DIYs and crafting but then when it comes time to clean that epic mess… womp, wooomp. It’s usually such a pain, but this time it wasn’t bad at all with some help from my new Eureka vacuum! This thing is a vacuuming master. I have a feeling that all of my crafty friends are going to want one of these bad boys! Quick, add it to your Christmas wish list!

Clean up from decorating the tree and wrapping presents was super quick and painless which means more time spent to appreciate our pretty tree!

So this Eureka is known for it’s SuctionSeal (plates that raise and lower against the surface maintaining suction and seal without scattering debris). It also uses Air Speed technology (a wide tube of air with minimal bends and twists that allows air to move freely across a shorter and more direct path). It’s originally priced at $148.88 but is currently on Rollback for $129 at Walmart (where I got mine)! It’s all the way on the right in the photo below! Learn more and check it out in action!

A White Thanksgiving

December 10, 2014 by Ciera Holzenthal

If you follow me on Instagram you already know that I went to Maine again this Thanksgiving. It was a White Thanksgiving in more ways than one. It was Zander’s family, The White’s and it was super snowy! (I’m just realizing this, but next Thanksgiving I’ll officially be a White too since we are getting married in October, whoa!) The snow was actually so heavy that it caused the power to go out for two days while we were there! Luckily the house is set up with a generator because I guess it happens a lot. Although we had some power from that, we had to be careful and couldn’t run too many things at one time. We attempted to cook a few things in a makeshift oven over the fire but luckily the normal oven didn’t fail us, we somehow managed a perfect Thanksgiving dinner, even on generator power. We did turn it off at night and curled up to sleep by the fire to stay warm! Of course we had to take advantage of the snow as it was falling, then came right back in the stay warm!
