Frontage Font [Friday Favorites]

August 17, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Happy Friday, I have a special font to share with y’all today! I just adore fonts that have layering options! Frontage is a charming layered type system by Juri Zaechwith with endless design possibilities using different combinations of fonts and colors. Achieve a realistic 3D effect by adding the shadow font or just use the capital letters of the regular and bold cut for stark artwork.

Frontage Font Type Specimens and Design

The typeface’s design is based on a simple grid which creates the friendly, handcrafted look of facade signs. It is generously spaced for maximum impact of your message. As a display typeface, Frontage loves color and is suitable for headlines and logotypes. Details include 224 characters in six styles and manually edited kerning.

You can download Frontage Outline for free by just paying with a tweet or Facebook post by clicking the image above!

Heading Home

August 8, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Huge news today friends! Zander and I have decided it’s time to move back to New Orleans! I’ve had an amazing year and a half living in Boston. I’ve made some amazing friends and explored more of the North East than I ever imagined I would! But our hearts are in New Orleans.

New Orleans Chris Rose Quote

Everyone in New Orleans has a special connection and shows it through eye contact when passing on the street. I miss that. I miss the warm, friendly and happy people. I miss hard rains, hidden courtyards, wonderful food, Oak trees, great music, the unique gumbo of people, southern hospitality and dive bars.

“If there was ever a town to have a reason to be full of sorrow and pain it is New Orleans. And although the damages of Katrina, poverty and crime are all around, it does not stop people from living to the fullest. Every day is a new day and more reason to celebrate.” –The Hungry Nomad

Proud To Call It Home New Orleans We Live In The Moment

It’s hard to explain, but New Orleans just has something special. It is not fast or efficient. It’s slow, sweaty and lazy, but it’s home. Every inch of this city has something beautiful in it’s own special way. I’ll miss the North East tremendously, but I’m ready to be back in the city that stole my heart!

DIY Air Plant Terrarium

August 3, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

My dad gardens more than anyone I know. He is always outside planting new things, repotting, rearranging and watering. Growing up, my yard was basically a jungle. Unfortunately, I did not inherit a green thumb from him. I’m VERY bad with plants, but I finally found a type that I haven’t killed (well not yet, at least)! Air Plants (also known as Tillandsia) don’t require soil to grow, only moderate light and a good soak every week or so—very low-maintenance! They are kinda weird-looking, but these little guys have so much personality! I find them so unique and beautiful!

Air Plant Globe Terrarium 1
Once I realized that I could keep these guys alive, I became obsessed with making little terrariums for them. They are super easy, affordable and very versatile. I made some for hanging and some for sitting flat on a table or shelf.

MATERIALS:

1: container – a glass globe or any glass container (mason jars also work great)
2: base material – moss, gravel or glass pebbles
3: plants – it is nice to have a few different sizes to add interest (I got mine here)

DIRECTIONS:

Once you have your materials gathered, just cover the bottom of your container with the base material and add your air plants on top. Told ya it was easy! Feel free to get creative with it, you can really add whatever you like to the terrarium, I added some special shells and rocks that I collected from a few vacations.

Brand Spotlight: Brooklyn Taco

August 2, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Just loving this brand identity for Brooklyn Taco Co. by Tag Collective. How about you?

The identity started with a wordmark that speaks to their craft and references hand painted signage seen throughout Brooklyn, this is paired with a Mexican inspired color palette and patterns.

From the groundwork created by the graphic identity, the space took shape incorporating a strong graphic pattern, color palette and typography provided by the brand toolkit.

Penobscot Bay Driftwood

July 30, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

When we arrived to Lincolnville it was a little too early for dinner, but all of the little shops around were already closed so we decided to walk along the water. While we were walking we found this amazing piece of driftwood and decided to stop and explore it further. The sun was at the perfect spot in the sky and the colors and textures on the wood were so beautiful.

Old North Church [Boston Photo Tour]

July 27, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

The Old North Church, in the North End of Boston, was built in 1723 and is the oldest active church building in Boston. It is also the location from which the famous “One if by land, and two if by sea” signal is said to have been sent. This phrase is related to Paul Revere’s midnight ride, of April 18, 1775, which preceded the Battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution.

Travel Map Pin Board DIY

July 25, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Since we moved up North, Zander and I have been doing quite a bit of weekend traveling. I really wanted a special way to keep track of the places we have been together (and our bedroom walls were bare) so I decided to make this travel map cork board! It was pretty easy once I figured out the logistics… so now I’m going to share the how-to with you!

travel-map-pin-board-diy-title700

MATERIALS

paper // printer // tape // frame // cork roll // spray paint // exacto knife // spray glue // map tacks
These links are what I used but feel free to be creative!

Travel Map Pin Board DIY 1

1. Decide what size your map needs to be to fit in the center of your chosen frame. Print out and tile together a map of the US. My map is about 20″ wide for a 18″ x 24″ frame. The map I used can be downloaded here: [download id=”25″ format=”10″]

Travel Map Pin Board DIY 2

2. Once your map is tiled together, tape it to a piece of cork just big enough to fit the map. Work on a cutting mat and trim around the outer border with an exacto knife (making sure to trim all the way through the cork). You will not be able to get very detailed here, and that’s okay (as you can see I chopped the little hook off of Massachusetts all together)!

Travel Map Pin Board DIY 4

3. Once you have cut around the entire map you can go back in and cut out any additional details. Remember, it is easy to cut more away but not to add back on!

paint-and-glue

4. Trim your next piece of cork into a rectangle that fits snugly into your frame. I used the cardboard backing that came in the frame as a size guideline. 5. Bring the trimmed rectangle outside and paint one side white. 6. Once the paint dries, use spray glue to attach the cork map to the center of your (now white) cork backing. Remember, spray the backside of your cork map only!

Travel Map Pin Board DIY 7

7. Place your map board into the frame (using the cardboard the frame came with as a backing). You can glue to the cardboard to the cork back if you prefer.

8. Print out and trim your title and location flags. 9. Fill in your flags with places you have been and places you want to go! 10. Add your title and destination flags to the cork map with pins and your done! You can download my template here: [download id=”26″ format=”10″]

The measurements above are what I used for my frame, but make sure to measure yourself, as frames will differ. You know the saying, measure twice, cut once! And please be VERY careful with the exacto knife, I actually cut myself while working on this project!

To The Max

July 20, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Okay, I know Maxi skirts and dresses have been on trend for quite some time now, but for some reason I’m just getting into them. I’m kinda short so I just never thought I could pull one off, but I’m gonna try it out… as soon as I can decide which to buy first! Here are some that I am looking at. Do you have a favorite maxi style that I should try out?

Juxtaposed 01

July 18, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

I’m starting a new series called juxtaposed where I create mini mood boards with images that complement one another. They will mainly be visual posts as the collections will speak for themselves. Hope you enjoy!

Boston Common & Public Garden [Boston Photo Tour]

July 16, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

Here we continue on the Boston Photo Tour! The starting point of the Freedom Trail, Boston Common is the oldest park in the country and the Public Garden is America’s first public botanical garden. I just love meandering the Public Garden’s paths looking at the lagoon, monuments, fountains, musicians and the swan boats! When my sister was in town, we picked up lunch from a food truck and brought it to the park to people watch.

Revolutionize Her Team

July 9, 2012 by Ciera Holzenthal

I am so excited to announce that I am now on the social media team for RevolutionizeHer! RevolutionizeHer is a community built around the everyday woman who is looking for a place to share her story of following her dreams. It is for the wives, mothers, students, or working women. It is for women who are aspiring to be better in all aspects of life. For women who are learning to love themselves and be comfortable in their own skin.

There are many messages out in the world telling women what they can and cannot do. RevolutionizeHer was made to challenge those ideals and to help women see that it’s okay to be who they are and reach for their goals. This community is meant to help empower and motivate women whether it be to celebrate her successes, work through her frustrations, build up an idea, get or give advice, or just to get some encouragement.

Due to the success of their partner site, Better Blogger Network, they decided to relaunch their co-authored blog over to a Ning community website. This type of site allows for easy communication, a central location to ask and answer questions, and a way for all members of the site to interact with one another in a way that their blog had not allowed for in the past.

Our hope from the beginning of RH was to create a sense of community for women wishing to live out their dreams as well as a place to discuss those aspirations with other like-mined individuals – and we think that this is going to be the best way to do this.

The launch date is set for tomorrow, July 10th, so if you’d like to join or follow along, here are the links you need to know: Main RevolutionizeHer Site, Twitter, Facebook. I will be handling the social media accounts for RH every Monday.

I could not be more excited to be a part of this community. I’m really looking forward to meeting new people so I hope to see you there! My personal RevolutionizeHer profile can be found here so you can add me as a friend or say hi once you sign up!

UPDATE: RevolutionizeHer has decided to close their doors, please join their partner site, Better Blogger Network!
