Shell’s Instagram Inspiration

June 13, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Hello, friends of Ciera. My name is Shell, I normally blog over at Kitty & Buck, and I’m so pleased to be here today. When I was trying to decide on the topic I’d write about today, I kept coming back to the idea of inspiration. As a fellow designer, I appreciate finding it in the most unlikely places. So today, I’m going to share with you nine of my favorite instagram accounts, where you will find beautiful images and everyday inspiration. I love checking out color and composition, especially.

@honeydue @stephanie_somebody @amandajanejones @trishpapadakos @emilieristevski @mimiochun @dschwen @nonalimmen @deercircus

The images above link directly to their instagram accounts! @honeydue / @stephanie_somebody / @amandajanejones / @trishpapadakos / @emilieristevski / @mimiochun / @dschwen / @nonalimmen / @deercircus

I’m not a huge instagrammer, myself, though I just inherited a slightly better phone, with a better camera, so I’m hoping I’ll feel more motivated to share everyday moments that aren’t so grainy! I’d love to hear about any instagrammers who you find inspiring too, if you leave a comment, I’ll be sure to check them out. You can peek into my daily life on instagram @KittyAndBuck.

Thank you so much Shell, I love finding new instagrammers so I can’t wait to check these guys out when I return home! I think this has also inspired me to do a post of some of my favorite instagrammers too! – Ciera

Mellow Mushroom Oak Street: Out & About New Orleans

June 10, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Out & About Mellow Mushroom New Orleans

I’m totally obsessed with one of the newest restaurants on my street. Mellow Mushroom is a franchise but the owners, Elizabeth and Austin Kent and James Son, did such a good job of making it fit right in on Oak Street! They totally transformed a two-story house that was built in the early 1900s and were able to preserve the original façade and a handful of interior decor.

The franchise really promotes local ownership and operation, said Son, a New Orleans native. Each location is completely different and really focuses on the local community.”

Although the chain has certain requirements regarding consistency and standards for the menu, franchisees are still able to source their produce and products locally. When renovating the building they used local contractors, architects and artists, including Graffiti Graphics, aka my super talented parents, for their awesome sign!

Mellow Mushroom Oak Street New Orleans Fortune Teller and Colored Windows

We really wanted to emphasize where we were and use as many locals aspects as possible, said Son. For me it’s really important that we be a part of this community.”

Mellow and Oak Street each portray a funky vibe that fits right in with the culture and residents of this area,” states Elizabeth.

Once I was done obsessing over the decor, it was time to eat and man is their pizza good! I especially like the Red Skin Potato Pie. It sounds a little weird, but it’s SO good! I have already been way too many times since they opened in March!

Introducing The Made In Mind Social

June 6, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Hey guys! I am SO excited to finally share what my sister and I have been working on for the past few months. We are starting a meetup for bloggers and creatives in Louisiana called The Made In Mind Social. We had this idea in the back of minds for a while, but after attending the Creating Offline Events panel at Alt Summit, I was really inspired to get it going! We have been working behind the scenes on the logo and website and officially launched this week!

tThe Made In Mind Social

Our goal is to build a community where everyone can share their passions and encourage each other to keep their creative juices flowing. Whether you are a blogger, graphic designer, artist, photographer, fashion designer, DIY lover, makeup artist etc., we want to network and get to know the people behind their work!

We are planning our first event as we speak so if you are in the area, we would LOVE for you to become a member and attend some of our events!

If you won’t be able to attend our events, you can still support us by sponsoring the Made In Mind blog or sponsoring an event! This is the perfect event to get your name out to bloggers and creatives in Louisiana!

How to Work from Home & Keep Your Sanity

June 4, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Tricks to keep on track while being your own boss and working from home.
Last July I quit my full-time corporate designer job to venture out on my own, and I had so many ideas about how wonderful working from home was going to be. I learned very quickly that working for yourself can be a difficult job – you must have a lot of self-control and focus. Here are some tricks I’ve used to keep myself on track while being my own boss.

1. Set Work Hours

One of the reasons I quit my full-time job was that my husband was tired of me coming home after an 8 hour day and spending 4 more hours working on side projects. And to be honest, I was tired of it too. So when I started working from home, I set a rule that I wouldn’t work nights or weekends anymore.

For the first few months, this was really hard to control. I was enjoying my freedom during the day by going on walks and getting housework done, but I was putting off design work for the evening – which made me quitting my job pointless.

When you work from home, you need to find a happy medium – one of the best things about working for yourself is the freedom you have to come and go as you please, but you need to have the self-control to get your work done during the day.

That’s why setting work hours is a good practice. If you feel more motivated and can concentrate better in the morning, then set you work hours from 9 to 1 and run your errands in the afternoon. Or maybe work a normal 8 hour work day and allow yourself an hour lunch break like a normal job would.

Of course, you’ll have to adjust these hours depending on your workload or when your clients can meet with you, but whatever hours you choose make sure you stick to them so you’re not working when you don’t want to be.

2. Create an Inspiring Workspace

Having a creative space set aside for you to work is another important aspect of working from home. Being able to go to your ‘office’ each morning and being inspired by your surroundings will help keep you focused on your work and away from distractions. Having your own workspace helps keep your work organized, and it will make it easier for you to distinguish work life from home life.

Even if you spend part of your day working from other areas of your house (like your bed!), it’s nice to have a space dedicated just to work. Plus, it’s fun to have a place just for you to keep your pretty design & craft supplies, right?

3. Get Motivated

When you work from home, there are going to be days you don’t feel like getting out of bed. Taking the day off one or two days a month isn’t the end of the world, but taking 3 days off in a row when you have projects due isn’t going to make you a successful entrepreneur.

For those days you just can’t seem to find any motivation, create a playlist of all the songs that pump you up or inspire you. I have a Spotify playlist called Biz Inspiration and anytime I need a pick me up, I listen to those songs and am instantly inspired to get stuff done.

Another way to beat being unmotivated is to get out of the house. I’ve found that if I go to my favorite coffee shop, grab a coffee and put my headphones in, I can get so much done in an afternoon. Being away from the distractions of home helps me focus on my client’s needs instead of my own, and gets me motivated to get more work done.

As hard as it can be at times, owning your own business is one of the most rewarding things you can do in your life, and all the struggle is worth it in the end! What tips do you have for working at home? Share them in the comments!

Ombre Cluster Necklace with Martha Stewart Jewelry

May 30, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Guys, I love Martha Stewart. I drool over Martha Stewart Living each month when it comes in the mail and I have a hard time not buying up every item of hers when I walk into Michaels. Thanks to Plaid Crafts and Martha Stewart Jewelry, I recently had the opportunity to try out some items from the new collection! I love wearing long necklaces so I decided to make an ombre cluster necklace with the beautiful purple Czech beads. I’m obsessed with how it came out and how easy it was. I want to make one in every color now!

Ombre Cluster Necklace DIY with Martha Stewart Jewelry

YOU WILL NEED

small flush cutter
round-nose pliers
18 Czech beads
(I used purple beads, but they have lots of other pretty colors)
toggle clasp
fat oval chain (18″)
a smaller chain (you will need about 14″ for the necklace + 9 links to attach your beads to)
18 small jump rings or extra links from your smaller chain
18 head pins
1 medium jump ring

 Ombre Cluster Necklace Tutorial

DIRECTIONS

1 Connect 7″ of the smaller chain to each side of the 18″ fat oval chain. Do this by opening a link on your smaller chain with the round nose pliers then closing the link around your fat oval chain. 7″ is what I used but it’s up to you to decide how long you want your necklace to be!

2 Again, by opening a link on the loose ends of your smaller chain, connect your toggle clasp

3 Cut an additional piece of your smaller chain 9 links long and connect to the bottom of your clasp with a medium jump ring

4 Thread you czech beads onto head pins and make loops on them. Since I had never done this before, I looked at a few videos online to get me started. It took me a few mess-ups to figure it out, but I quickly got the hang of it!

5 Start attaching your beads to the 9 links hanging down, two per link. I used chain links to connect the beads, or you can also use small jump rings. Start with the lighter colored beads at the top and work your way down to the darker ones, like shown below.

I can’t wait to dive into all of the other awesome stuff that came in my box from Plaid, like epoxy clay, jewelry glaze, molds, rhinestones and charms! You can see what some of my other blog friends made with their supplies here! Martha Stewart Jewelry supplies are available exclusively at Michaels and you can find Plaid online on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.

The Font Feast Presents Strawberry Piña Coladas

May 22, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

strawberry pina colada recipe

Piña coladas might possibly be my favorite thing to drink in the whole, wide world. When we go out for Mexican food, what do I order to go with my combination plate? A piña colada. If I’m lounging by a fancy resort pool in the tropics, what do I have the waiter charge to the room? A piña colada. Sipping on a cool, fruity drink while laying in the warm sun is pretty much the most delightful thing I can think of! With sunny weather here for good (fingers crossed), I can’t wait to enjoy these all summer long for cook-outs, family BBQs, afternoon snacks…

Super Tiki is the perfect font to go with these delicious Strawberry Piña Coladas. It’s fun, it’s tropical, and it’s got just the right amount of  retro kitsch. It looks like a Gidget movie, for crying out loud!

strawberry pina colada recipe

Strawberry Piña Coladas inspired by Super Tiki

5 oz cream of coconut (NOT coconut milk!)
1 tablespoon coconut oil
4 oz rum or pineapple juice
1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup crushed ice
sweetened whipped cream for garnish

Combine all ingredients except whipped cream in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses, top with whipped cream, and serve immediately. Serves 2

Mikado Font [Friday Favorites]

May 17, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Happy Friday! I have a new favorite font for you guys! Looking at this font just makes me happy. It makes me feel like a fun summer is approaching and I just want to go eat snoballs, ride a ferris wheel and lay out on the beach!

Mikado is a friendly, casual type family designed by Hannes von Döhren. It is intended to be used everywhere where a pleasant feeling should be conveyed. It has the openness and regularity needed for agreeable reading, and a lively and informal appearance that makes it shine in large headlines, slogans and logos. Mikado has a positive, kind of “out-of-the-box-appearance” in big sizes, but because of its straight architecture the fonts are also very legible in smaller sizes and longer texts – in print or on screen.

Mikado is equipped for complex, professional typography with alternate letters, ligatures, arrows, fractions and an extended character set to support Central and Eastern European as well as Western European Languages. Love Potion and Brandon Grotesqu, two of Hannes von Döhren‘s other fonts have shown up on this blog before as favorites!

How to Protect Your Skin This Summer

May 15, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

One of my awesome sponsors, Bonnie of Rodan + Fields is here today talking about summer skin care. I desperately needed these reminders a few weeks ago as I got a miserable sunburn at Jazz Fest. I was so mad at myself for forgetting sunscreen!

Summer Skin Care

“Bonnie, you are 23, you are way too young to have skin cancer. This concerns me.” As if those words were not scary enough to hear, at least five additional times I heard the doctor say “He’s way too young for this…” sounding incredibly concerned each time he muttered it.

That was 22 years ago. Aloha. My name is Bonnie Cribbs, and I blog over at Beach Money CEO, tweet at @boatingBonnieC and I am addicted to the sun. OK, so “addicted” may be a very strong word, but I sure do love all things summer & sunny. I spend much of my summer at the lake having fun on my boat and I absolutely love the ocean and sitting by the pool….and I drive a convertible. I’m overweight and balding, so having a good tan has been rather important to me – at least I can have a good tan going for me, right? And for a living, I sell skin care products. It almost sounds like a conflict of interest, doesn’t it?

As summer is approaching, I want to talk about taking care of our skin this summer. It will be a Hodge-podge of how-to-protect-your-skin tips. Katie Rodan, one of the infamous doctors who created Proactive Solutions and most recently founded Rodan + Fields Dermatologist said “Genetics are only responsible for 20 percent of how your skin will age. 80 percent is in your control and that’s great news. It is never too late to change your skin’s destiny.” The sun is the culprit for most of that 80%. So that’s great, we know what to protect ourselves from. Now we just have to know how….and actually do it.

10 Minute Rule

In the time it takes you to have your morning cup of coffee, or wait in line at the Starbucks Drive Thru, the sun is working it’s magic on your skin. Before leaving the house, always use sunscreen. Sunscreen is not just for a day at the pool or for a few hours at the park. If you are going to be out in the sun any at all, wear sunscreen. In my car I keep a bottle of sunscreen and a hat. I love having the top down, but I always want to protect myself from the harmful and dangerous rays.

Reapply Every Two Hours

“I’m not burnt, I don’t need more sunscreen.” That is really bad logic. There is a deeper purpose than simply preventing being burnt, your skin needs to stay protected from the sun. In addition to applying sunscreen before leaving the house in the morning, reapply every two hours…and yes, especially when you’ll be out in the sun. But don’t be fooled, UVA damage can also occur in the house.

A little Dab A Do Ya

That’s such a misconception. When applying sunscreen, most people do not apply enough, so make sure you follow the bottles direction and apply liberally.

How Old??

That’s not just the question people will be asking you when you tell them you are only 30 when your skin looks 40 (or visa-versa if sunscreen is used), but it’s also the question you need to ask about the bottle of sunscreen you are applying. Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time, so always be sure to you check the expire date before you buy or before you apply.

It’s So Cloudy Today!

As I mentioned earlier, I have a boat and spend much of the summer out on the lake. Those cloudy days when the suns rays are not directly beaming down on us are always the days people get sunburned the most. And then they wonder why. Don’t be fooled by the cloudy day, the sun is still getting to you. If you see light outside, the sun can do damage to your skin.

Avoid Tanning Beds

I was in college in the late 80’s. This was before the time that everyone knew that tanning beds were bad for you time limits were on the beds. In the Spring I went to the tanning bed a few times a week and stayed in for 45 minutes each. Yes, I had an incredible tan and remember well that my time in the tanning bed was definitely some of the best naps I had in college (while listening to the cassette tape of Dirty Dancing), but, well, did I mention skin cancer at age 23? Avoid tanning beds. They’re not worth it.

Is There A Pill For that?

I have two points to make here. Yes, there is a pill to take to get your Vitamin D. So don’t use “I need my Vitamin D” as an excuse. The other point is this: If you are on medication, be sure to know how it affects your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. There are a lot of medications out there which increases your skin’s sensitivity toward the sun so don’t be caught by surprise and burn at even a faster rate.

I See Spots

If you have new bumps, hard spots, new growths or changes to existing moles, freckles, birthmarks…be sure to ask your doctor about them. It’s always best to catch it early. Catching them early is a very good thing – it allows you to have the spots removed before they spread. Again, check with your doctor.

The Speedo Rule

If you are a guy and have a desire to wear a speedo, resist that urge. Just don’t do it. OK, so this has nothing to do with sun protection and should just be considered a public service announcement.

At Rodan + Fields, all of our skin care regimens have sun protection at their core, including sunscreen in our cremes. We also have sunscreen, lip shield, etc. We have you covered from head to toe. You can visit my shop to find out which products are right for you.

As I mentioned earlier, I blog at Beach Money CEO. Most of my post are related to helping your business succeed, business tips, motivational pieces, some skin care tips and the occasional post about something personal. Please feel free to stop by and visit me there!

GIVEAWAY TIME! CLOSED

As if these awesome skin care tips were not enough, Bonnie is also offering one lucky Ciera Design reader a $50 American Express gift card! You can use this to purchase all of your summer skin care necessities! Or whatever else you may need for the summer! Giveaway open to US shipping addresses only.

MTIT // Galena by theirison

The Art // This painting titled Galena by Erik Jones stopped me dead in my internet browsing tracks. She looks like she’s wearing some futuristic head-dress. The splashes of lines and colors create an exotic mane, but her features and expression is so calm and elegant.

The Inspired // This ceramic vessel by Elke Sada is a piece of art on it’s own. It looks as if a painting has been cut up and molded into a bowl.

4 Ways to Stand Out from the Rest

May 7, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Click through to learn how to set your business apart from the crowd!

These days, it seems like everyone is starting their own business or blog, which crowds the market and makes it hard for anyone at all to stand out – unless you make yourself different, memorable and remarkable.

Today I’m sharing a few ways to make your business stand out from the rest.

1. Take the rules and throw them out the window

There are just some things that certain niches don’t do, simply because no one has done it before. One way to become memorable is to push the envelope and think outside the normal box that everyone else in your industry lives in. It can take lots of brainstorming and work, but creating a service or a product that is different from everyone else’s will pay off. Think of Virgin America Airlines – what other airline has mood lighting and screens in every headrest that allow you to watch tv and surf the internet without a laptop? They thought outside of what other airlines were doing and are hugely successful because of it.

2. Use practices of your favorite brands and infuse them into your own

You love your favorite brands for a reason – maybe they offer little extras with each purchase or they have the best customer service on the planet. Write down all of the reasons you love your favorite brands, and try to figure out ways to infuse some of those things into your own brand. This will help you build a brand you love while standing out because you’re a little bit different from the rest of them.

3. Offer something unique

Just because other designers offer branding, web and illustrating services doesn’t mean you have to too. Know what you’re good at and stick with that. If you have restaurant experience and love the fast paced world of hospitality, think about focusing your design services just toward hospitality companies. That way you’re working only with clients who are in an area of work you’re an expert in, and you’ll become known for just working with those certain types of clients. This helps you create a unique brand among others who are offering all sorts of services to all sorts of people.

4. Don’t wait for permission

If you want something – go for it! Don’t wait for people to reach out to you, if there’s a project you’re dying to work on or a collaboration you want to do, be the person that reaches out. You don’t have to wait around for someone to give you permission to make your dreams happen. Be the connector and people will see you as a person who knows what they want and knows what types of projects they want to work on. You’ll set yourself apart from those waiting around for success to fall into their lap.

What ways have you tried to set yourself apart from the crowd? Share them in the comments!

Friendship Bracelet DIY

April 30, 2013 by Ciera Holzenthal

Ever since I gave out friendship bracelets at Alt, I have been wanting to make my own and I finally did! I got these really pretty antique gold square links from Kollabora and decided they would be perfect for these bracelets! I love friendship bracelets for layering with other bangles during festival season and summer and these are easy to make in a variety of colors!

Friendship Bracelet Directions

YOU WILL NEED

4 yards of waxed cotton cord or embroidery thread, connector charm, scissors, tape, ruler, super glue

DIRECTIONS

1 Cut the knotting cord into two 30 inch, two 20 inch and one 10 inch lengths. Fold the 20 inch piece in half, pull the loop through the connecter charm, fold it over, and pull the rest of the cord through the loop. Repeat the step on the other side of the charm. These strands will remain anchored.

2 Tape it to something sturdy so the bracelet is secure while you make the knots. Center the 30 inch cord under the two middle strands. Fold the right cord over the middle strands and under the left cord.

3 Pull the left cord under the right and middle strands and through the loop on the right side. Pull the strands tight and push the knot up to the top.

To finish the other side of the knot, fold the left cord over the middle strands and under the right cord. Pull the right cord under the left and middle strands and through the loop on the left side. Continue going back and forth until you get to the desired length (keep in mind that the clasp will take up approximately half an inch) and then move on to the other side. See video below.

4 To finish the knots, thread both cords up 3–4 knots along the backside. Pliers or a needle may help with this.

5 Cut the ends and dab them with super glue so that they are even more secure. Do this process to both sides.

6 To create a sliding closure, shape the bracelet into a circle and overlap the ends. Using scrap cord, temporarily tie at the ends. Take the 10 inch cord and center it under the strands. You’re going to start the knot exactly the same way you did before.

7 Create 4–5 knots and finish the ends the same way you did before. Undo the temporary ties. The two sets of middle cords become the adjustable ties of the bracelet. Adjust it to fit your wrist and trim the ends.
