The Font Feast Presents Gratin Dauphinois

My family is really big on food traditions. We always have the same thing for dinner on St. Patty’s Day. We always have the same thing for breakfast on Christmas. And the Thanksgiving menu never changes. Without fail, we have mashed potatoes and gravy with our turkey, and they’re always delicious. BUT. These Gratin Dauphinois, which are really just scalloped potatoes with a fancy French name, are pretty irresistible, and would make an amazing addition to any Turkey Day menu. They’re actually a long-time family favorite, filled with butter and cheese and hints of garlic. If only I could talk my family into a potato upgrade…

For potatoes with such a fancy name, I needed a font with lots of oomph, and Baker Script is a perfect fit: rustic yet elegant, lovely and legible.

Gratin Dauphinois inspired by Baker Script

1 1/2 cups milk
3 lbs waxy potatoes, unpeeled (I like Yukon Gold or Klondike Red)
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 heaping cups shredded cheese (whatever kind you want)

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer over medium-low heat. While waiting for the milk to simmer, thinly slice the potatoes. We’re talking THIN slices, like 1/8″ thick. I use a mandolin for this and it’s a breeze. If you don’t have a mandolin, just slice them with a sharp kitchen knife. Lightly spray a 9×13″ pan with nonstick cooking spray. Scatter half of the potatoes evenly over the bottom of the pan. Drizzle half of the melted butter over the top (2 Tablespoons), and sprinkle on half of the salt, half of the pepper, and half of the garlic powder. Top with 1 heaping cup of shredded cheese. Repeat layers. When the milk has come to a simmer, pour it evenly over the top of the cheese layer. Bake for 40 minutes, or until deeply golden and bubbly. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Stately Type – Hand-lettered US Map Prints & T-shirts

Kickstarter really has some amazing stuff y’all! I recently came across Stately Type, a project by graphic designer David Lesue. It’s basically two things: first, it’s a big 20″x 16″ letterpressed map of the United States where David hand-lettered the name of each state within the distinctive form of its boundaries.

Second, it’s 50 individually designed hand-lettered t-shirts—one for each state in the union. David designed each one to reflect the identity of the state it represents—matching the shirt color and graphic color to each state’s personality.

The inspiration for this project came from my love of hand-lettered type and my fascination with the iconic shapes of state boundaries. By combining those two elements, I’ve come up with something that looks stunning—maps of the individual states and of the US as a whole that feel very personal, distinctive, and hand-crafted. -David Lesue

Four Ways to Spark Your Creativity

Let’s face it – as people with creative businesses, there are times when we feel a lack of vision and innovation. Whether it’s because we’re working on projects that leave us uninspired or we just simply can’t get our creative juices flowing, it’s a slump we don’t want to be stuck in for long.

Four Ways to Spark Your Creativity and Get Re-inspired

It’s something I’ve been struggling with lately, so I’ve come up with four ways to get re-inspired:

1. Try to remember the time when you were feeling the most creative or inspired.

There are moments in our lives when we feel like nothing can stop us and we can’t stop coming up with great ideas. The key to reliving those moments is to figure out what made those moments so special. Where were you at? What were you doing? Who were you with? What were you feeling? Try to recreate that moment as best as you can and you’ll be on the right track to getting your creativity back.

2. Take a class

We’re often inspired by new adventures and meeting new people, so taking a class or doing a workshop will help kick your creativity back in gear. Make something by hand, learn something new and connect with other creative people and you’re sure to get inspired. Some online courses to check out are CreativeLive (watch free courses) or Skillshare.

3. Visit Your Favorite Places

Our surroundings are one of the things that inspire us the most, and we all have places where we feel most inspired. When you’re feeling less creative than normal, it’s a no brainer to visit your favorite places to get yourself going again. Whether you’re influenced by the displays at your favorite store or by a landscape or park you love the most, take time to visit those places, enjoy them and let them motivate you.

4. Spruce Up Your Resources

Just like buying new workout clothes might help you to get back to the gym, new creative resources can help amp up your inspiration. Download some new fonts, explore new color schemes, try out a new program or let a new design book help you dream up new ideas. Something as simple as a new font to play with can totally transform your mood and your work.

What I Wore // Striped Maxi Dress and Moto Jacket

Hey friends! I haven’t done one of these post in quite some time but I found a new online shopping experience that I really want to share with y’all! It’s called Golden Tote and it’s the ultimate surprise grab bag!

I have never mentioned this on the blog, but I am not a fan of shopping. I’m very picky and have trouble finding clothes that fit well so I get frustrated and moody when nothing works out. I have come home empty-handed so many times, so I decided to try a different method.

I tell Golden Tote my size and let them do the shopping for me! This is also a good way to help me try new items that I might not choose on my own. They curate tote bags with a variety of items from different brands at prices 70-80% off original retail. In September I chose the $149 tote, which meant I got to choose two items and then I was surprised with the rest! I ended up with six items total which averaged $26 a piece after shipping!

Moodboard: Shine Bright Like A Diamond

On Generosity and Selfless Giving

Open your eyes to the possibilities around you.

I’ve been thinking and thinking what amazing topic I could share on Ciera’s blog. I’m so grateful she keeps letting me blog hop. I think I post more on her blog than my own! I had several ideas to write about but the one that sticks with me the most is generosity, or selfless giving.

My daughter had her first school fundraiser recently. She was so excited to help out her school (I don’t even think she understood that there are prizes for the best sellers). She just really wants her school to be a better place….but, no one will buy anything from her. It’s $1 for a chocolate bar or a jerky stick and you get it immediately. C’mon, it’s $1. I got to thinking a lot about this experience. What does it tell a child when they are trying to do something and no one will support them? How does it feel when adults only say “No” Or I can’t afford that? What does that teach them about money?

We went through some pretty darn hard times in our not too distant past. We lived on dry food storage for a year. It was miserable. Our family knows what tough times are but I still found ways to be generous (even if it was only a dollar here or there) because I’m not just buying a candy bar or donating to pay for someone’s medical fund. I’m investing in people. Real live human beings that need a chance and they need to feel loved.

When I started my Etsy shop I asked friends and family to simply put in a plug for me on Facebook or my blog. I even offered some pretty sweet things in return. They didn’t even have to buy anything but NO one would help me! It was pretty disheartening and it took a while for my shop to get started because getting those first few sales is really the hardest. So, I now make it a point to try to buy something from my friends when they start new endeavors. Sometimes money is too tight and I take a rain check but sometimes I give up something else I want so I can help them and then we are both the better for it.

I wasn’t always this generous. I met a new friend about 7 years back that showed me what generosity means. Often times I found people commenting on something awesome she had like a necklace or a bag and she would say, oh I’d love for you to have it and while they blinked she would hand it to them. When we went to parties, instead of sitting down to enjoy herself, she would go straight to the kitchen and start pitching in. She even gave her car away instead of trading it in because she said the kid needed it. Wow. I was the one turning down every school kid that came to my door and here my friend is giving cars away. She really helped open my eyes.

Money can’t buy everything. We all know that. But we CAN use our money to do more and to serve instead of only being a slave to it. I don’t have any specific agenda here. I’m not going to ask you for any money or tell you a charity to donate to. I just hope that the people who take the time to read this will open their eyes even more to the possibilities around them–The possibilities of the amazing things a little bit of money or a helping hand can do. Check out Dedra’s shop, blog and Facebook.

The Font Feast Presents Candy Bar Surprise Cookies

I have had a pretty major sweet tooth for as long as I can remember. My family tells a funny story about me trying to lunge out of the shopping cart as a baby whenever my mom went past the candy aisle! Needless to say, I have to try pretty hard to resist all of the candy my kids bring home from trick-or-treating. These fun little surprise cookies with candy nestled inside are a great way to use up all of those delicious little mini candy bars from Halloween. Make a batch and give them to friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Surprise!

To go with these Candy Bar Surprise Cookies, I chose a cute Halloween font, Sketch Bones. There aren’t too many occasions that call for really cartoony fonts, but if you can’t write out a message with cartoon bones at Halloween, when can you?!

Candy Bar Surprise Cookies inspired by Sketch Bones

1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
about 30 mini chocolate candy bars, unwrapped (Milky Way, Snickers, 3 Musketeers, etc.)
Preheat oven to 375°F. In a large bowl, cream butter, sugars, and vanilla until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet, and stir to combine. Use an ice cream scoop to shape the dough into balls. Take a dough ball in one hand, and flatten it slightly. Place a mini candy bar in the middle of the cookie dough, and carefully fold the dough up and over the candy bar, completely enclosing it in dough. Reshape as needed. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and repeat with the remaining dough balls and candy bars, placing 12 cookies per baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes until just beginning to turn golden on the edges. Remove from oven, cool on sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Makes 2 to 2 1/2 dozen cookies.

Circles Conference 2013

Jasmine and I have been busy planning Made In Mind’s October Social (which is tomorrow, come if you can!) so it somehow took me a month to get this post up, oops!

Design Your Life Hand Drawn Type

Last month I got to attend Circles Conference in Grapevine, Texas. As described by the founder, it’s a place to learn from world-changing thinkers and innovators for the creative community. It was amazing. So inspiring. The main message I took away was to design my own life. Figure out what will make me feel satisfied and happy and create that life for myself. You can’t see someone else’s life and say “Hey, I want that life” you have to make it for yourself!

Two days packed with meeting new people and listening to inspiring talks from amazing creatives across multiple disciplines. It was great to meet people who were previously only Twitter friends, as well as make plenty of wonderful new friends.

It turned out that Justin Shiels, a fellow New Orleanian, was attending so we got to know each other better! Blog buddy and fellow graphic designer Patti was nice enough to let me crash in her room. It was really fun hanging out and sharing stories of running our own businesses. I also got to meet Ismael Burciaga (the event coordinator) who has been an online friend for a few years now. It was wonderful to meet him in person, he is so talented and generous and was a great host! And then I met the lovely Joanna Waterfall who happened to be on my flight home for a vacation in New Orleans for a few days!

It was very honest and genuine and no one was scared to share their struggles which was very refreshing to hear. It was great to hear so many talented people talking about their personal journey and not just telling us their design process. It was nice to take it all in and learn from their experiences. The intimacy was something you don’t get at larger conferences.

The after party was also a blast, we got some good Texas BBQ and it was great to mingle outside of the conference setting.

Another plus is that Circles is very affordable compared to a lot of conference and since it’s in Texas the travel was affordable for me too! I definitely recommend attending next year! I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite quotes from different speakers on the blog in the future!

So I first saw Inaluxe over on IAMTHELAB and just had to share with y’all because I am in love! Inaluxe is a small design team consisting of Kristina Sostarko and Jason Odd.

While we both have a very different approach to creating, the upside of this is we love working on designs together, and what comes out of our combined efforts. As well as keeping busy with Inaluxe, we freelance and work on independent design and writing gigs. It keeps things fresh, and we love that.

Four Years of Blogging!

When I started my blog, I could have never imagined where it would be today! Since I’m celebrating four years of blogging this month, I thought I’d give y’all a little history of how it all got started. Then for the rest of the month I will have some other special posts and surprises for y’all!

Ciera Design Four Year Blogiversary

In 2009, I had been at my agency job for a few years and I wasn’t really feeling satisfied by the design work I was doing anymore. I decided to start a blog to get some of my ideas out. It started as a photo dump. I would post my random iPhone pictures with a little caption and might expand a little here and there. I had no plan and no organization. Soon after, I left my job to start my own business and I knew that I needed to create a portfolio site that potential clients could check out. So in 2010 I decided to take my site and blog to the next level. I started posting on a regular basis with relevant and consistent content. It has been growing ever since into what you see today!

I love networking and meeting new people who I probably would have never had contact with if not for blogging. In January, blog friend and contributor, Mariah and I roomed together at Alt Summit and at Circles Conference last month I got to be roomies and hang out with another blog buddy, Patti! I love hearing about adventures of other bloggers who work for themselves and love following along with other creatives!

One of my favorite opportunities that has come from starting this blog was being able to attend Alt Summit this year! It was SO inspiring! When I walked into the Bing It To Life Lounge at Alt Summit the LAST thing I expected to see was my travel map pin board, but there it was, and it was huge! Bing took submissions of ideas to showcase and my DIY creation was chosen to come to life! It was really special to see bloggers from all over interacting with my idea and pinning their business cards to the map! It was so surreal to see it all over Instagram and it was such a cool way to see where everyone was from.

I’m always trying to take this blog to the next level and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in the next four years! Thank you so much to all of my readers for encouraging me, challenging me to keep creating unique content and for all of your comments over the years, it really means the world to me!

Herve Leger Backstage: New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

Hey guys, I’d love to welcome the lovely Carly to the blog today! Y’all have to check her blog out, so much awesome stuff from fashion week including sneak peeks from backstage like she is sharing with us today!

Hi Everyone, it’s great to be guest posting on Ciera’s beautiful blog. I studied fashion design and worked in New York City in the fashion industry for a few years. About six months ago, I decided to combine my passions of photography and the artistic elements I love about fashion into the blog Carlytati.com.

Working in the industry has taken me around the world to many interesting places working with very talented and dedicated people and my friends and family in other fields were constantly wondering what my job was like. What did I see? What was I doing during all those trips to places like India to Italy. The blog is a journey in photos of things I find interesting or beautiful to share with you some of the things related to fashion from behind the scenes. I can’t resist to have some food and travel on there too, that’s just part of the journey! Thanks for reading~~

Backstage at the Herve Leger New York Fashion Week show was full of energy and excitement for the collection. It was a huge backstage area for hair, makeup and dressing, and yet it was packed with people eager for a first look from all around the world. The press was clicking away with their cameras, capturing the beauty preparations. The celebrities were talking with Lubov and Max Azria about their inspirations for the season and getting a sneak peek before the looks hit the runway.

The models were being made up into the vision of the strong and confident women of the Herve Leger presentation for Spring 2014. Drawing on their signature body conscious silhouettes, the twist was in the pops of prints inspired by polynesian body art. Other details included fringes that moved as the models walked.

The makeup look was created by Val Garland of team Sephora and was inspired by a beach goddess, all bronzed and glowy. So what were the products used to achieve those subtly smoldery eyes?

1. Apply a bronzer in the socket line to create a natural looking shadow.
2. Apply Marc Jacobs Beauty Style Eye-Con Plush Shadow in colors The Glam and The Lolita.
3. Sephora’s Waterproof Smoky Cream Liner in Must Have
4. Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon in Blacquer
5. Buxom mascara on the lashes

As the models lined up to take the catwalk, I left backstage just in time to watch the show! So there you have it, a snapshot from backstage. I’m looking forward to trying the smoky eye look at home. Do you think you will try it?
