One of the things I miss about living in Boston is being so close to Maine. We used to go up and visit Zander’s grandmother all the time! I just came across these photos that I took with my Golden Half camera of their fish house and the launching of the float one year, I think from 2011.

I ♥ my Golden Half Camera. Just look at how cute it is! I am using the camera for the first time and will post some images as soon as I get them developed… yes… it is actually a film camera!
So the cool thing about this camera, besides how it looks, is that it allows for two shots on one frame. You get a cool diptych photograph with the two frames divided by a black line. This 35mm half-frame camera allows a standard 3″ x 5″ photo to be split into half (3″ x 2.5″ frames), letting you snap double the amount of photos. Anyone else have a Golden Half Camera with images to share? Subscribe to the Ciera Design RSS feed or follow me on twitter so you don’t miss out when I post the photos!

Today’s gift guide is for the photographer in your life! I have my eye on a few of these things for myself. Finding gift ideas for the photographer friend can be really fun and doesn’t have to be as expensive as you might be thinking! While buying a professional camera will tend to be too expensive for a gift, secondary or toy cameras like a pin hole, Holga, Poloroid, or Golden Half would make a great gift.
Then there are tons of smaller items that can help photographers out or just allow them to have some fun. Items like filters, straps, thermoses, tripods, cleaning kits, memory cards, flash diffusers and notepads are all great additions to any camera bag. With smartphone cameras getting better and better you can even go the route of getting photo accessories like lenses, cases and touchscreen gloves for phones!
If you are pretty sure they have all the gear they could ever use, you can help the photographer in your life increase their knowledge on the subject. There are tons of ebooks, online courses and educational photography books out there! Hope you enjoy these gift ideas for the photographer!
1 Conde Nast Traveler Photographs / 2 Kate Spade Polka Dot Thermos / 3 Epiphanie Bags Belle Camera Bag / 4 Color Lens and Flash Filters / 5 Touchscreen Gloves / 6 GoPro Camera / 7 Wood Camera iPhone Case / 8 Bright Camera Strap / 9 Field Notes

If you haven’t made a card for your dad yet, you still have time! I decided to make this card from one of my Golden Half prints. A photo of you and your dad together would be really great for this project!
I’d love to see a photo if you make a card for your dad. My dad does not use a computer, so I don’t have to worry about him seeing this early!
A few weeks ago, Z and I took a little weekend road trip to Martha’s Vineyard to visit with some friends. It was still too chilly to head to the beach, so we decided to visit the Fulling Mill Brook Preserve. We took a short hike down the path and stopped at a few streams and waterfalls along the way to snap some shots. The first two photos I took with my Golden Half camera. The others are from Eric Soikkeli, who came on the hike with us!
My family is really big on food traditions. We always have the same thing for dinner on St. Patty’s Day. We always have the same thing for breakfast on Christmas. And the Thanksgiving menu never changes. Without fail, we have mashed potatoes and gravy with our turkey, and they’re always delicious. BUT. These Gratin Dauphinois, which are really just scalloped potatoes with a fancy French name, are pretty irresistible, and would make an amazing addition to any Turkey Day menu. They’re actually a long-time family favorite, filled with butter and cheese and hints of garlic. If only I could talk my family into a potato upgrade…
For potatoes with such a fancy name, I needed a font with lots of oomph, and Baker Script is a perfect fit: rustic yet elegant, lovely and legible.
Gratin Dauphinois inspired by Baker Script
1 1/2 cups milk
3 lbs waxy potatoes, unpeeled (I like Yukon Gold or Klondike Red)
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 heaping cups shredded cheese (whatever kind you want)
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer over medium-low heat. While waiting for the milk to simmer, thinly slice the potatoes. We’re talking THIN slices, like 1/8″ thick. I use a mandolin for this and it’s a breeze. If you don’t have a mandolin, just slice them with a sharp kitchen knife. Lightly spray a 9×13″ pan with nonstick cooking spray. Scatter half of the potatoes evenly over the bottom of the pan. Drizzle half of the melted butter over the top (2 Tablespoons), and sprinkle on half of the salt, half of the pepper, and half of the garlic powder. Top with 1 heaping cup of shredded cheese. Repeat layers. When the milk has come to a simmer, pour it evenly over the top of the cheese layer. Bake for 40 minutes, or until deeply golden and bubbly. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
